One of the most interesting data sets for aspiring mapmakers is the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Among other things, that survey includes a detailed look at the languages spoken in American homes. We say “interesting,” but not on its surface. Why? Because it turns out that, excluding English, the most popular language spoken at home is Spanish. And we don’t mean in Texas or California or other border states. We mean everywhere, or at least in 43 states out of 50. That’s, um, what’s the word we’re looking for. Yeah. “Dominant.” It’s only when you begin digging below the second level and exclude English AND Spanish that you find interesting “third” languages (did you know Vietnamese was the third most popular language in Nebraska?).
